The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
I don’t keep up on a lot of movie releases, but my husband likes to rent movies to watch when he has to travel for business. He told me I would love The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. I wasn’t sure. I’m not exactly a huge Ben Stiller fan. Also, Jeff often likes his movies more action-packed than I do, so I was hesitant. Turns out he was spot on with this one. I really did love the movie and I found it to be very creatively inspiring as well.
Take a look at the screen shots in the images above. Look at the composition, the scenery, and the focus. From the opening credits (which blend into the scenery), you can tell that the cinematography in this film is going to be amazing. It is! I think it’s worth watching just for the photography inspiration alone.
I also liked the story though. It is just a story, but it’s interwoven with some real events so it feels like it could be true. I love the backdrop of LIFE magazine as part of the plot. I won’t give you any other spoilers because I hate that. I’ve sort of reached the point in my life where I don’t even like to watch movie trailers because they give away to much of the plot. That was something that was wonderful about this film for me - I had never even heard of it.
So if you are looking for a creative exercise, I would recommend watching The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It is rated PG and they do say a few bad words, but it was refreshingly different in that it wasn’t filled with swearing and uncomfortable scenes. Take some time to think about the filming, the scenery, and the overall message. I bet it will make you think about your own life and how you want to live and document it.
