Drive-In movie theaters should make a comeback

I only went to the drive-in movies a few times as a kid, but I remember thinking it was so cool. Now, it just might be the way to keep the movie going business going! I’m lucky enough to have a very comfy reclining couch and a big screen in my basement, so that is definitely my favorite way to watch a movie these days, but I could see going to the drive-in as an activity that I would actually feel comfortable with right now. This article lists 32 of the best drive-in movie theaters in America. Do you have a drive-in theater near you? We only have one in the Salt Lake Valley and the last time I went (probably about 20 years ago) it was quite old and rundown. I hope they will consider upgrading it now that there might be more demand.

The History of the Classic Drive-Ins

Drive-in movie theaters became the classic American entertainment experience in the early 1900s. This idea was patented by Richard Hollingshead in 1933 for his mom since she was unable to fit comfortably in regular movie theater seats.

Park-In Theater was later created from Hollingshead’s idea as a drive-in that catered to families. This theater sparked many more to sprout up all over the US and became very popular during the 1950s Baby Boomer generation, also known as the car-loving generation. These drive-in theaters offered an affordable family outing and date night option for kids.

Unfortunately, as towns became more developed over time and land became increasingly pricey, these drive-ins suffered as modern cinemas and technology began to dominate the industry.

Even though these drive-ins struggled in the past, many have stayed open and are symbols of nostalgic American culture. With today’s current COVID-19 situation, they have made a comeback and offer a way to support local businesses.

Mix things up with this fun activity idea for your family or even for a romantic date night. Check out these retro drive-ins in America in this visual from CarRentals!
