Memory Monday - Memorial Day
Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day” and it is a United States holiday set aside to honor those who died in any type of military service. Over the years many have expanded this day to include any family members who have died regardless of whether or not they served in the military.
In a month where we also celebrate VE Day and Armed Forces Day, it is a wonderful time to pay your respects to family and friends who have died in military action. Visit their gravesite, or a war memorial. Use some of the prompts from the other 2 holidays to record your feelings and create a tribute page.
If you take this day to remember other loved ones who have passed away, create a page in their honor. This can be very therapeutic for working through your grief and feelings of loss. Enjoy the times you had together by documenting them through words and pictures.
Of course, a 3 day weekend at the end of May has made this into a ready made excuse for recreational outings and vacations and many feel that the holiday has lost its original meaning completely. How do you feel about Memorial Day? How do you mark this day? What activities do you participate in over Memorial Day weekend? There are no wrong or right answers here, just take some time to document how Memorial Day fits in with your memories. A great activity for a Memory Monday that happens to fall on Memorial Day!
