Staying creative when things are crazy

My life has really been crazy this year. We’ve had some significant illnesses, injuries, challenges, changes, and just all sorts of random things that have popped up. It’s really always been that way (life usually keeps us on our toes) but it feels like it’s been a bit of a pile on lately. Even with all of that, we are all still OK and that’s what matters at the end of the day.

I definitely have not had as much creative time (or energy), but I want to remember to recognize that I have still found ways to squeeze some creativity into my routine. Here are some of the things I’m doing to stay sane and happy.

Project Life App - template A. Merry & Bright card from my Christmas Joy collection. Tree card from Comfort & Joy collection in the Project Life app.

I made 15 pages last weekend in the Project Life App. I decided to go through and fill in the holes (there are many) from last year. I was regular about doing monthly roundup pages so that is really helpful. Now I’m creating simple pages and even some collages to fill in the gaps. This layout is all about the button tree project I blogged about here.

The one creative activity I’ve been consistent with this year is reading. I mostly read on the Kindle app on my iPad so that helps me get in some reading time in a variety of circumstances. I most recently read this book on happiness that really ended up being a lot about creativity. I really enjoyed it! You can see all the books I’ve read so far this year (and read my short reviews) on Goodreads.

You might think this is a silly one, but I promise you that it is legit. I’ve been pinning a ton of ideas on Pinterest and that is one of the ways I fuel my creative soul. It’s like posting all my thoughts and dreams to a big bulletin board where I can visit them again when the time is right. Oh, and I don’t look at my numbers very often but I was sort of blown away when I looked at the number of monthly viewers next to my name. One million!

A few other creative activities I’ve been enjoying:

  • Designing. For some reason this has really been my jam lately. I’ve had a lot of fun working on different themes and I’m already pretty excited about my April release later this month.

  • Spotify playlists. It’s been fun to put these together and this is something my son Alex and I have enjoyed working on together. You can see my public playlists here. I’m still adding to a few of them.

  • Blogging. I’ve missed a few days here and there, but I’ve generally posted about 3 days a week this year.

How do you stay creative when life gets crazy? I’d love to know!
