Love Being Alone

I’m exploring chapter 3 in my book club's newest selection of A Book That Loves You: An Adventure in Self-Compassion. This chapter is about loving alone time, which is really not a problem for me. I think because I was an only child until the age of 12, I feel pretty comfortable with being alone. I know that isn’t the case for everyone, though. My daughter doesn’t seem to like it at all. I had a friend in high school who always called and begged me to come over anytime her house was empty. Of course, there’s also a big difference between being alone and feeling alone. You can feel alone even when you are surrounded by others. Nobody likes to feel alone.

Favorite bits:

“If you can get to know yourself and genuinely appreciate your own company, you’ll not only be more present and engaged around other people, but you’re less likely to feel lonely when a quiet moment settles in.”

I found the passages dealing with grief and loneliness very interesting. There are so many different stages of life, and everyone experiences loss and pain. I like that the authors shared ways to embrace and move through difficult times.

“ A story has been cut short. Be at ease; silence and inwardness are needed to make you understand what the loss means and to slowly develop a new story.”

The bookmarks in this chapter have cute designs and I love that I can remember the lessons I have learned from this book, even while reading something else.

As you can see, I’m tearing out and cutting up pages as I read this book. The authors have encouraged this! I love all the pretty pages, and I know I want to use several of them to help me build a brand-new vision board.

I selected this book as part of my “curriculum” because it’s important to remember that creativity should be fun!

I hope you will read it through and then really apply what you learned by trying some of the activities.

Want to join in?

  • Purchase A Book That Loves You: An Adventure in Self Compassion. This is not a book you can borrow from the library because you tear out some pages to make creative and inspirational projects. It doesn’t work on Kindle either for that same reason.

  • Join the online book club and/or follow along here on the blog. You can even subscribe to receive blog posts via email.

  • Take your time with this book. I’m going to work on this book during March and April. No rush here! I’ll be posting about my activities and learning from each chapter.

  • Do something (or many things) that you learned from the book. The best way to learn is by doing!

  • Share the ideas you learn about with others. Tell your family about what you are reading, post in the book club, or post some thoughts

  • If you have any thoughts you would like to share about the book, feel free to post in the online book club. You may also enjoy sharing a review on Amazon or Goodreads.
